Fresh install and keep droplet snapshot on Old Ubunt 14

Posted on July 23, 2019

Hello,

I have a droplet with an old version of Ubuntu: Ubuntu 14.04.6 LTS as web server LAMP.

I tried a do-release-upgrade but it didn’t work so I had to restore a snaphost.

I would like to make a fresh install of Ubuntu 18 LTS but keep my snapshot in case I can’t reinstall it or I have troubles to restore mysql databases.

How to make a fresh install of the last LTS Ubuntu and keep my snapshot ?

Thanks, Vincent.

Hi,

Hopefully you’ve worked out how to do this but just in case, snapshots are images you can create or restore droplets from - if you’ve created a snapshot, you should be able to later create a new droplet from that snapshot if necessary.

Here are a couple of DO guides on using snapshots:

https://www.digitalocean.com/docs/images/snapshots/how-to/snapshot-droplets/

https://www.digitalocean.com/docs/images/snapshots/how-to/create-restore-droplets/

There are some other related articles in the same section, eg, how to transfer snapshots to different regions or migrating a droplet, eg, https://www.digitalocean.com/docs/images/snapshots/how-to/migrate-droplets/.

Hope this helps - let us know how it goes!

Hello,

Thank you for your answer.

There is a phrase I don’t understand in the Destroy Tab / Rebuild droplet:

If you select an image with a different operating system than this Droplet, you can break your configuration. Proceed with caution.

I want to make a clean install and I don’t want to keep any of my configuration files. So why this warning message?

First I have to destroy the droplet for a clean install?
