I tried using PuTTY to add public key authentication, and in spite of following the How-To instructions I suppose something went wrong somewhere since I’m asked for a passphrase when I try to connect to the server with PuTTY. I don’t know what my next step should be.

Which particular How To did you follow? Are you selecting the key from the options panel on the left, under the Connection -> SSH -> Auth portion? Did you save/resave your session info after selecting the key?
