Hostnames and reverse PTR

Posted on December 28, 2013

Regarding Reverse PTR as configured on DO’s dashboard, must the hostname of a Droplet match the domain hosted on it for emails to be sent successfully from the domain?

Hello,

The name of the droplet must have a FQDN format name. In this way the assigned PTR record will be correct and you wont have issues with it.

DigitalOcean automatically configures the reverse dns entry (PTR) on their end. It will be the hostname you choose when you set up your dropplet. You can change/check this in the control panel by selecting your dropplet, then settings, then rename. As it says, changing the name there will update the PTR but not the hostname of the system, that is something you will need to do, instructions for that vary depending on the system you have installed.

Hope this helps! Let me know if you have any questions.

Regards, Alex

Bummer! I think that’s why I’m unable to send email.

Is there any way to change the hostname so it is reflected on the dashboard?

But what if you are hosting one server as email server for multiple domain? I cannot put multiple domain into 1 ip. What to do this case?
