how can i increase the disk size of my ubuntu droplet?

Posted on January 7, 2015

I currently have an ubuntu droplet that is disk full. I generated an snapshot and I need to increase the droplet disk size (double it) and recreate it with my current snapshot.

I’ve already read that I need to destroy the current one and redeploy it with the new size from my current snapshot, but I really appreciate if anyone can give me a step-by-step procedure to do this, trying to reuse my current IP address.

Thanks in advance.

Sure thing. You can use the following procedure to resize your droplet.

  • Create a snapshot of your existing droplet
  • [Optional] Create a droplet from your snapshot to ensure that it works as expected. Destroy the test droplet once you are done.
  • Delete your current droplet and wait to ensure the destroy function completes before going to the next step
  • Create a new droplet of the size you want in the same region as your old one using your snapshot instead of one of the stock OS or application images.

The new droplet will inherit the IP address of the last deleted droplet in the same region.
