How can I test multiple sites on one droplet before transferring the domain name?

Posted on April 8, 2014

I can hit my droplet’s IP, but I just see the first site I set up. Once I transfer a domain I can get to it and everything works, but I’d like to test and configure a site before I transfer the domain’s DNS over to the new droplet.

@jough.dempsey

So your site has sub-domains, and you’d like to test them before switch over the domain’s DNS. Is that right?

Unfortunately, you can’t use sub-domains with just an IP number. I’d suggest either temporarily setting your virtual hosts to point to folders e.g. your.ip.address/subdomain1, your.ip.address/subdomain2 or setting up DNS to point to new “stagging” sub-domains. Something like:

subdomain1-stagging.your-domain.com
subdomain2-stagging.your-domain.com
