Following this otherwise well-written tutorial left me without the possibility to choose a newly installed kernel.
I’ve installed the linux-image-3.14-1-amd64, but in the kernel drop down menu I only see the standard kernel choices, with the vmlinuz-3.2.0-4-amd64 being the newest.
After installing the new kernel via apt-get uname -r returns “3.2.0-4-amd64”
I run a Debian x64 VPS updated to jessie, and am at a loss to what I should do next.

+1 for allowing custom kernels. Oddly DO has a tutoral for installing Debian unstable, but no testing/unstable kernels are supported.
The tutorial it is written for releases that are supported by Digital Ocean. For example lets say your droplet runs Debian Squeezy 6 and you want upgrade to Debian Wheezy. DO doesn’t support custom kernels yet but you can add your vote here https://digitalocean.uservoice.com/forums/136585-digitalocean/suggestions/2814988-give-option-to-use-the-droplet-s-own-bootloader.

This is really bad. We can upgrade but not switch kernel which in turn made iptables-persistent fail! So now all my rules are gone. Well not loaded at least.
Running stable is just not on option at this point and you removed arch. Sigh.
