How to backup Spaces?

Posted on May 12, 2018

How can I backup the data on a Space? There are many articles on backing up TO a space but if the space if your primary storage, is there an easy way to snapshot/copy a space?

Yes. The s3cmd tool which can be used with spaces has the option --recursive that will allow you to download an entire bucket locally. You can find some examples here.

There are also options that will allow you to mount your Space on your computer. Once mounted you would be able to use any backup solution that allows you to back up files on your computer.

Thinking about the same question here.

We know we can download the contents of our space to either via the DO-UI or using a s3cmd, but that would mean backups count towards our transfer quota, correct? What guarantees does DO provide for data on Spaces?

Cheers,

We were thinking of using Digital Ocean Spaces for backups of an app minus some static client assets. Those asets we wanted to store and load directly from one DO Spaces bucket (including its awesome CDN. The app minus those assets we would daily backup in another DO Spaces bucket. If the separate static assets we load of the Digital Ocean storage bucket dies we lose all these client files.

So the main thing we were wondering about is what guarantees you give for preserving the data. We do not just want to backup using Transmit or something to backup our buckets. That would be tedious and make us store things locally which is not that reliable either. If we store static assets on Digital Ocean Spaces do we need to / do you recommend us to add a secondary backup with another Digital Ocean Spaces bucket or even elsewhere?
