To enable automatic backups on an existing server, you’ll need to follow these instructions:

  • Create a snapshot of your server
  • Delete your server to release the IP
  • Immediately after the delete is finished, create a new droplet, choose the same datacenter, and in the “select images” section switch to “my images” and select your snapshot. Then check the “Enable Backups” box. This server will almost always capture the IP just released.
You have to tick "Enable Backups" on Droplet creation. You cannot do it after it is created.
You can make a snapshot of your droplet and then destroy it. After that, build a new droplet from your snapshot and this time be sure to enable backups.

The IP of your old droplet should be kept if you recreate it soon after destruction, but if you're worried you can open a ticket and DO support can reserve the IP for you.
