How to get the IP address of a running Docker from the host?

Recently someone asked me how to get the IP address of a running Docker from the Docker host directly so I decided to put together a few examples of how to do that!

Accepted Answer

There are a few ways to get the IP address of a specific docker container. I will go through a couple of them.

The first thing you need to do is either get the ID or the name of your container. You can do that with the following command:

docker ps

Once you get the container ID or name, you could use one of the following commands in order to get the IP address of your container:

Using native Docker syntax

docker inspect -f '{{range.NetworkSettings.Networks}}{{.IPAddress}}{{end}}' container_id

As this is quite a long command, here are a couple of alternatives.

Using grep

docker inspect container_id | grep IPAddress

Using jq

docker inspect container_id | jq .[0].NetworkSettings.Networks[].IPAddress
