Posted March 11, 2017 18.6k views

I have a problem to set the MX records on the DO. I have an account with GoDaddy, but I am using the DO for service. However, I also bought the emails service with GoDaddy to and I have problem to set up. According to GoDaddy if I dont make service with them, they dont provide service for emails too.

My question, how to setup it so I can start receiving emails from outside the world?

I do not have any resource at GoDaddy but I know how to use the third party DNS service. You can try below:

  1. Confirm that you have replaced the default nameserver with DigitalOcean ( etc.) at Godday’s domain setting panel.
  2. Waiting and checking the new nameserver is effective.
  3. Add these records with GoDaddy email service at DigitalOcean’s Domain tab, these records should contain MX, TXT, maybe also have CNAME if it provide web-based login interface
  • I have site and I find a way to do my DNS. But this is different issue. The problem that I have I dont have any idea what should I input for MX records.

    • If you don’t konw the MX records of Godaddy’s email service, maybe you should consult Godaddy’s customer service.

In addition, You can go back to use Godday’s dns service.

      • so here is setting that they giving me

what should I do with this?

        • You have to confirm the type of the two records. Generally, a mail service should give you more than one MX record, maybe it will gives you a stmp server address.

Now we assume you have already added a domain name ’’ to DO’s Domain manage panel.

I guess ‘’ is the stmp server address, so you could add a CNAME record at DO’s Domains manage panel, there are 3 fields required you to input.

          1. Hostname: mail
          2. Is an alias of:
          3. TTL (Seconds): leave the default value

The record '’ maybe it is the MX server. So you can try to add a new MX record at DO’s Domains manage panel, there are 4 fields required you to input.

          1. Hostname: @
          2. Mail providers mail server:
          3. Priority: 10
          4. TTL (Seconds): leave the default value
