I have setup several VPN with different regions but my VPN speed is coming very low. Download speed on speedtest.net i am getting is around 8Mbps, i am not even able to complete test cause upload speed is not raising above 0Mbps.
When downloading direct link file my speed is not going more than 250Kbps, without VPN my download speed for same link is 9Mbps.
I have tried New York, San Francisco, Amsterdam, London & Toronto.
Local Speed test on CLI is below.
Download: 797.37 Mbit/s
Upload: 178.74 Mbit/s
I am using in UAE.

Hey friend,

I would try ruling out encryption by trying a basic tunnel. If you can identify that you get good speeds through an unencrypted tunnel, then you know the problem is specific to the configuration of the VPN protocol used. If you don’t get better speed through an unencrypted tunnel, then you know it’s more likely just that you can’t get better throughput to one of the datacenters.

This has suggestions on disabling encryption with OpenVPN:

Here’s an outdated article on setting up a PPTP VPN:

Note that PPTP is not considered to be secure and is not recommended for actual usage, I am merely recommending it as a potential avenue for an easy test.

A Point-To-Point Tunneling Protocol (PPTP) allows you to implement your own VPN very quickly, and is compatible with most mobile devices. Even though PPTP is less secure than OpenVPN, it is faster and uses less CPU resources.
  • Hi Jarland,

Thank you for replying. I tried PPTP setup but thats even slower. I cannot use OpenVPN as my router only support L2TP without encryption or PPTP.
