If I destroy my droplet and recreate a new one will I get the same old IP address ?

Posted on December 11, 2014

My droplet is compromised and DO support suggested me to destroy and recreate new droplet. If I destroy my droplet and recreate a new one will I get the same old IP address ? I can’t change my IP as it is used by many clients.

No, once you give up the IP, there is no guarantee that you’ll get the same one again. Instead of hard coding IP addresses client connections, you should use hostnames instead. That way, if you ever need to change the IP, your clients will automatically get the new one (once it propagates through DNS).

Hello there

When you destroy a Droplet, it’s IP address is released back into the data center’s pool of available IPs. These are assigned randomly, so it’s very unlikely you’ll get that IP address back. However, when you rebuild a Droplet, the IP address is retained.

You can find more information here:

https://docs.digitalocean.com/products/droplets/how-to/rebuild/

A DigitalOcean Reserved IP address is a publicly-accessible static IP address that you can assign to a Droplet and then reassign to another Droplet later, as needed. You can implement a failover mechanism with reserved IPs to build a high-availability infrastructure.
