mod_rewrite does not work on a Joomla droplet

Posted on July 8, 2015

Hi, i’ve a issue with mod_rewrite on a Joomla droplet.

mod_rewrite is enabled on the droplet and on Joomla. The .htaccess is active in the Joomla root.

But mod_rewrite doesn’t work, i get a 404 error for all sites.

Is there anybody, who can give me a hint, what is the trigger?

Hi there,

In case anyone comes across this in the future, here are the things that I would usually check:

  1. Make sure that the mod_rewrite module enabled Apache using the apachectl -M and looking for “rewrite_module” in the list of loaded modules.
  2. If the module is enabled, you might have to also restart Apache using the sudo systemctl restart apache2
  3. Verify that the .htaccess file in the Joomla directory is correct: https://docs.joomla.org/Preconfigured_htaccess
  4. Ensure that the AllowOverride directive in the Apache configuration is set to “All” for the Joomla root directory. This will allow the .htaccess file to be used:
    <Directory "/home/user/public_html">
    AllowOverride All
    </Directory>

  5. Check the error log and access log of the Apache service to see if it provides more information about the issue: tail -100 /var/log/apache2/error.log

Best,

Bobby
