To start, I’m sure this answer is somewhere in the support section of this site but I’ve tried a few ways, destroyed a droplet and have about 50 tabs open. I’ve never created my own VPS.
I currently host 6 different domains running 4 different wordpress sites and 2 html sites on a server (godaddy)
- would like to try and avoid purchasing cPanel for this
- would consider perhaps using ISPconfig…
I tried using Ubuntu 14, installed LAMP, etc. but started running into errors and got frustrated.
I’ve never used nginx before and have somewhat limited apache/mysql use and the more I’m seeing, it seems like nginx may be better for what I’m trying to do.
I plan on hosting more wordpress sites and more domains as time goes on, too. A handful of the domains also have email hosting set up through Google.
What is the best, and easiest, setup to accomplish this?

There are a few options that come to mind if you are not comfortable with the command line.
The first one is to use the free version of server pilot, you install a small server agent that automatically configures Apache + nginx + MySQL for you and then you can create different “apps” that represent websites - a bit like cPanel with a lot less features. Serverpilot is serious about security and will keep your machine secure and up to date.
The second option could be to install vestacp - a free open source cPanel alternative. It isn’t as mature in terms of features, but is light, fast and easy to use.
