Will it be able at some point to connect to the managed database instance through DO functions?
That would make my life a lot easier to migrate to functions.

Thanks for your question.
Yes, you can already to that. If you want a secure connection to the DB, you can add your function component to AppPlatform and add App as a trusted source to the DB.
For insecure connections, just providing the DB public URL/credentials should work.
