NYC1 VPC to SFO1 VPC with OPENVPN ACCESS SERVER

Posted on August 22, 2021

I have a need to setup a DRP site in another region. Can I use the openvpn client from NYC1 vpc droplet(s) and connect to SFO1 VPC OPENVPN ACCESS SERVER network to connect to SFO1 VPC Droplets? I do understand that network charges would apply. I need to know if this will function/work. Thank

Heya,

Just came across this answer and decided to write some general guidelines for anyone who comes across this in the future despite the old question.

To set up a Disaster Recovery Plan (DRP) by using an OpenVPN client within a VPC network, you should indeed be able to connect these regions (NYC1 and SFO1) via VPN.

Remember, you’d need to configure your OpenVPN Access Server correctly and make sure your firewall rules allow for the necessary traffic.

Please note that to ensure secure data transfer, you must thoroughly test this setup in a test environment before applying it to your production environment.

Here’s a link to a detailed guide in our DigitalOcean docs that covers VPN connections: Using a Droplet as a Gateway

Hope that this helps!
