OpenVPN + ClamAV + Dnsmasq + HAVP + Privoxy and gaming latency?

Posted on January 20, 2016

I’m thinking of setting up OpenVPN to secure my Internet connections at home (directly configured on the router) following this guide: https://www.digitalocean.com/community/tutorials/3-ways-to-securely-browse-the-internet-with-openvpn-on-debian-8

Is any of the components on that guide (ClamAV, Dnsmasq, HAVP or Privoxy) a really bad thing for online gaming? Will I have a higher latency making my gaming experience bad? Should I skip any of them or all of them?

Hey there,

This is really not something that can be answered definitively. Adding a VPN is going to introduce additional lag in your connection to your game and any additional inspection you do on top of that will just add more. Whether or not the lag will be noticeable or make your gaming experience bad is really subjective and depends on what game, your connection, where you’re connecting to, etc.
