How are you all! I have a VPS from digital ocean. I have a domain name from GoDaddy.com. I use the VPS to connect to IRC using terminal based clients such as irssi/weechat etc. My hostname on any irc server will appear as user@188.324.12.4, where I’d rather it be user@my.domain.com, which is supposed to be possible. I did some reading and I know a PTR/reverse A record needs to be created, although not on GoDaddy and no in Docean it can be created. So some say a PTR record for your droplet is being created automatically, although I couldn’t find any. I’d appreciated explanation on how this works exactly, and what steps needs to be taken by me so I can get this custom hostname up and running. Cheers

PTR record is created after you change hostname of the droplet to a valid domain (on the control panel, not in the OS). It usually takes about 5 minutes in my experience.
You will need to set the A (and/or AAAA record if you use ipv6) of your domain to point to the droplet as well.
Most major IRC networks require the domain to resolve both forward and back for it to display your desired domain name. So you need a valid PTR record set at DO and you need a valid A/AAAA record set at your registrar to point at DO, and they need to match.
EDIT: Also forgot to mention, most IRC networks also cache DNS lookups, so if you did this wrong and fixed it and still don’t see it coming up… try a different IRC network.
