Question

Request for Information Regarding SMTP Port Restrictions

Hello DigitalOcean Support,

I’m currently hosting a project on a Droplet and I need to send transactional emails via SMTP (using ports 465 or 587). However, I’ve read that SMTP ports are blocked by default on all Droplets.

I’d like to ask the following:

  • Is there any possible exception process or application that would allow SMTP access for a verified and legitimate use case?
  • If not, what would be your recommended best practice to send emails securely from a Droplet?

The intended use is for legitimate service purposes, including sending application alerts and user verification emails.

I’m not planning to run a full mail server — I just need to send emails from my application.

Thanks in advance for your clarification and support.

Hey.

The SMTP ports (25, 465, and 587) are blocked on all Droplets for new accounts to prevent spam and other abuses.

You could reach out to the DigitalOcean support team and check if they could lift the block for you:

Alternatively, to send mail from DigitalOcean, they recommend using SendGrid for example.

Heya,

The best solution would be to contact DigitalOcean support directly, explain to them the situation:

Hope that helps! - KFSys.
