Set up DKIM with Office 365 fails "Record name is not equal to or a subdomain of the domain name."

Posted on January 11, 2021

Hi, when trying to add CNAME record I get an error in the dashboard of digitalocean. “Record name is not equal to or a subdomain of the domain name.” I’m trying to set up DKIM with Office 365. That needs CNAME records to point to selector1-mydomain-nl._domainkey.mydomain.onmicrosoft.com. How could I get this done?

Hi @SmallAquaMorel,

You need to add your DKIM record as a TXT rather than a CNAME record. You can check the following article Adding DKIM and Return-Path Records to DigitalOcean on how exactly it can be achieved but the main principle is that when adding a DKIM, SPF, DMARC and records of the same type, to always use TXT.

Thanks! Yes normally I would do as you said, but because of Office, dkim has to be managed on their server. In the meanwhile I found a solution: first make a cname record with value ‘@’ or own domainname. When that record has been made, edit it and replace with the onmicrosoft.com value.
