Setting up a Wordpress droplet without a domain

Posted on August 7, 2020

Hey! I am trying to setup a Wordpress droplet without an existing domain and access it only through the IP address. However I cannot not get through the setup without being requested for a domain or subdomain. Is there a way to get around this? I only want to use wordpress as a CMS for a react native app and I don’t have a domain where I would want to show the content created in wordpress.

I believe you should be able to just use the droplet IP in place of the domain name.

I never use those auto-installers I do it all the old fashioned way so I can tailor everything to run on what I want it on.

Hello, @oskariShrimp

You can complete the installation using the droplet IP or any domain name of your choice (even if you don’t currently own the domain name), example yourdomain.com and then simply alter the hosts file on your local machine and trick your computer to bypass the DNS lookup and access the site on your droplet.

The location of the file is as follows:

Windows PC c:/windows/system32/drivers/etc/hosts

Mac OSX /private/etc/hosts

Linux /etc/hosts

Just open the file and the following line:

DropletIP yourdomain.com www.yourdomain.com

Note: change ‘DropletIP’ with your actual droplet’s IP address

Hope that this helps! Regards, Alex
