Setting up Nginx load balencing

The tutorial was confusing, can someone explain further? Are the backend1, 2 ,and 3 subdomains?

I don’t know to which tutorial you’re referring, but generally a load balancer sends traffic to identical servers that all server the same site or sites. Can you explain your question a bit more?

I was asking if when you reference the nodes in nginx do you have to give them their own sub-domains?

backend1, backend2, and backend3 are hostnames.
