Setup reverse dns for my mail server

Posted on July 31, 2021

I was looking for a clear answer for the reverse DNS setup matter in digitalocean but didn’t find anyone like that, so that I am asking below question. My situation like as;

I have a droplet named example.com and on this droplet I installed plesk and I configured this as my website as well as my mail server.

Now when I send email it goes to public spam folder and then I was searching for the problem why it is going to spam and noticed that its required a reverse dns.

Now my question is for setting a reverse dns what I have to do? Do I need a fully new droplet?

If new droplet need then what should be its name for acting as my reverse dns with my main mail server of example.com

Do I need to install plesk again to this server? What setting I need to do on this new droplet if I need to make it as reverse dns.

Do I need to use the new droplet as my mail server other then my existing server of example.com?

Please someone guide me with a straight path.

Hello, @hadithbd

DigitalOcean automatically configures the reverse DNS entry (PTR). It will be the hostname you choose when you set up your droplet. The droplet must be named with a fully qualified domain name (example example.com)

You can change/check this in the control panel by selecting your droplet, then settings, then rename. As it says, changing the name there will update the PTR but not the hostname of the system, that is something you will need to do, instructions for that vary depending on the system you have installed.

Hope this helps! Regards, Alex
