Question

Siteground hosting - how do you compare?

Want to know how you compare withh Siteground? I run a load of sites on there (eg www.propress.com.au) and they have always given great customer support, only having to wait a few seconds to chat to them - how do you compare on that?

Hi Matthew,

To add to what has already been mentioned by KFSys.

It’s great to hear about your good experience with Siteground, especially with their quick support.

DigitalOcean is very user-friendly, especially if you want to set up things quickly. They have something called 1-click Droplets available on the Marketplace. This means you can start a website, a blog, or other online services with just a click. It saves a lot of time with the initial server configuration.

About customer support: The support system here is a bit different but equally efficient in its own way. DigitalOcean has a strong emphasis on community support, with an extensive library of tutorials, Q&A, and a vibrant community forum. This rich resource of information allows users to find answers quickly and learn in the process.

For direct support, DigitalOcean offers different levels, including ticket-based support for all users and premium support plans for businesses requiring more immediate assistance. The support team is knowledgeable, especially about complex, technical issues, which can be a huge asset if you’re managing sophisticated projects or infrastructure.

Also, if you like DigitalOcean but want something a bit more like Siteground, you can use Cloudways. Cloudways is a service that works with DigitalOcean to make things even easier to manage, like handling a website or an online store.

In short, DigitalOcean is great if you like to have more control and learn new things as you will have root access to your servers.

Happy hosting!

Bobby

Heya @matthewbrown,

SiteGround and DigitalOcean are both popular web hosting providers, but they cater to slightly different audiences and have different strengths. Here’s a comparison of the two:

SiteGround

  1. Target Audience: SiteGround is typically more suited for beginners and non-developers. It offers shared hosting, WordPress hosting, and cloud hosting.

  2. Ease of Use: SiteGround provides a user-friendly experience, with cPanel for website management, which is a familiar interface for many users.

  3. Managed Services: SiteGround offers managed services, especially for WordPress. This includes automated updates, daily backups, and more.

  4. Support: Known for excellent customer support, including 24/7 phone and chat support.

  5. Pricing: SiteGround’s pricing starts low, especially for shared hosting, but prices increase after the initial sign-up period.

  6. Server Locations: Multiple data centers across different continents.

  7. Performance: Optimizations for speed and security, especially for WordPress sites.

DigitalOcean

  1. Target Audience: DigitalOcean primarily targets developers and businesses needing more control and scalability. It’s popular for cloud hosting and VPS (Droplets).

  2. Ease of Use: While DigitalOcean’s interface is clean and straightforward, it’s more geared towards those who have some technical knowledge.

  3. Managed Services: Offers some managed services like managed databases and app platform, but generally less hands-on compared to SiteGround.

  4. Support: Support is primarily online and ticket-based, which might not be as immediate as phone or live chat options.

  5. Pricing: DigitalOcean’s pricing is transparent and predictable with hourly or monthly billing. Generally more cost-effective for higher resource needs.

  6. Server Locations: Multiple data centers worldwide, allowing for flexible server placement.

  7. Performance: Known for high performance and reliability, especially for cloud VPS. Provides more control over server configuration and optimization.

    • Customization and Control: DigitalOcean offers more flexibility and control over the server environment, which is beneficial for developers or those with specific requirements.
  • Scalability: It’s easier to scale resources with DigitalOcean, especially for cloud-based services.
  • Transparent Pricing: DigitalOcean’s pricing is more straightforward, especially for predictable workloads.
  • Performance: Generally offers better performance for cloud and VPS hosting, essential for larger or more complex websites.

Conclusion

  • Choose SiteGround if you’re less technical, need managed WordPress hosting, or require more hands-on customer support.
  • Choose DigitalOcean if you’re a developer or have more experience with web hosting, need greater control over your environment, or are planning to scale your resources.
