I’m a student who’s currently juggling a few web hosts in mind for personal projects/websites, and a few of my friends recommended DigitalOcean to me. DigitalOcean looks great to me, but I was wondering if there were any student discounts available. I did a search and found a thread about this but didn’t have a public solution.

I sincerely doubt it, considering you will likely not find any other server for less than $5/month.
You might want to attend tech conferences where DigitalOcean is sponsoring or presenting stuff, they might give coupons (they did at Paris’ DotScale conference in may 2014) - which is great.
