Switching to Floating IP without downtime

Posted on October 27, 2015

Hi.

I got an “old” webserver running Ubuntu 14.10 LTS. Now I would like to utilize the new floating IP feature, so I can make it possible to make upgrades and changes to the server, without downtime.

Now is there anyway that I can get the floating IP on my current server, while keeping the current public IP until the public DNS for my website is fully globally propagated?

Regards

A floating IP does not replace the static IP already assigned to your droplet. It is provided as an additional interface so following the steps shown when adding a floating IP will not interrupt your existing interface. Once this is done you can repoint your DNS at your leisure to start using the new IP address.
