If WordPress is prompting you for SFTP/FTP information when installing plugins and themes this is a sign that your file permissions are not set up properly. WordPress only prompts for this information if it finds that it does not have permission to write the files needed itself.
If you set the ownership of your web files to the same user that Apache runs as “www-data” this prompt should no longer appear and it may also resolve the other issue you are seeing.
