Typing in a name for a subdomain is putting the name in front of the www

Posted on October 8, 2021

I am following this guide: https://docs.digitalocean.com/products/networking/dns/how-to/add-subdomain/#create-a-new-hostname-with-an-a-record

I am expecting to type “api” in the HOSTNAME field and get:

www.api.mydomain.com

But instead I get:

api.www.mydomain.com

The only additional records I have are NS records pointing to ns1.digitalocean.com, ns2, ns3 etc. and a CAA record reading www.mydomain.com

I tried deleting all the records and starting again, in case the presence of the www in front of mydomain.com (like “www.mydomain.com”) was part of the issue. This caused no change in the behavior of the A record input.

Obviously a me problem but I am not sure what the fix is.

Hey there!

It looks like you may have added your domain as a subdomain www.mydomain.com rather then mydomain.com to the DNS control panel. This would be the reason you are seeing api.www.mydomain.com. If that is the case you should delete www.mydomain.com and add the domain again but add the apex domain mydomain.com. You can then configure subdomains correctly under the apex domain.

Hope that helps! Nate
