I have Ubuntu 14.04 set up with a traditional LAMP stack. I can connect to sftp no problem. However, when I try and create a new folder it denies my request. I have tried two clients: FileZilla and Transmit on a mac. Thanks for any help.

What user are you connecting as? You need to grant it permission to write to /var/www:
sudo chown -R username:username /var/www
If Apache needs to write to /var/www too, you will need to run the following commands:
sudo chgrp -R www-data /var/www
sudo chmod -R g+w /var/www
