I just signed up with DigitalOcean for website hosting. For some reason, I was asked to verify my identity by emailing a photo of me holding my passport. Why is this required? I am not comfortable with sending my passport through email. Is there another secure way to verify my identity?

They’re trying to verify your identity. Possibly because the email address you’ve signed up with has been used before, or the credit card information has been used before with this service.
There are any number of reasons they could require this validation. You do not have to provide it, but in exchange, they do not have to unlock your account.
