Website folder is not visible

  • Posted June 29, 2014

We cannot find the website files on our server.

We are using <?php echo $_SERVER['DOCUMENT_ROOT']; ?> in one of our HTML files to display the server path to our Wordpress installation, which looks like this:

But we cannot find this directory AT ALL! I have checked all other file folders as well, along with making sure that any hidden files are showing.

I’m 100% sure that this is correct server - no website files are there. I’m so confused.

I’m also a Ubuntu newbie, so if you respond, please do so in 3rd grade language :)

Can someone please help me get to the root of this issue? It has been several hours.

Actually, I think I’m finally seeing what is happening here. This website is on a different server.

The IP address of this website looks very similar to the server I’m looking at, but it’s actually a different IP altogether. It is hosted at Digital Ocean as well, which is why I was 100% convinced it was the correct server.

Thanks @crashsomethingapps,

This actually did not produce any results. Weird.

I have also tried finding a more common file, such as “xmlrpc.php”, that also did not produce any results, even though I’m looking at those file the minute I’m typing this.

I’m logging in as “root” from the Digital Ocean interface, and we have only 1 Droplet.

Any advice?

Upload a file to your server with a unique name like “thisFileIsSpecial.php” and run this from ssh:

sudo find -name “thisFileIsSpecial.php”

That will tell you exactly where it’s located on the file system.
