What Are My Options (Backup)

Posted September 30, 2015 1.9k views

I am relatively new to Digital Ocean. I have about 12 droplets under my account, for various different clients.

I have backup enabled on each droplet, however i was surprised to learn that this does not include a backup of the database.

Can anyone recommend any other backup systems or scripts that will automatically backup the files and database on a daily basis… even to 3rd party storage?

Thank you in advance for your help.

A droplet backup includes every single thing that is on the droplet. It’s a complete copy of the filesystem, which means that it does include your database. However, you can’t restore part of the backup only. So you can’t restore just your database.

You can set up your own backup solution using Bacula. Take a look at the following series:

This tutorial will show you how to perform a full hot backup of your MySQL or MariaDB databases using Percona XtraBackup on Ubuntu 14.04. The resulting database backup can then be copied to a remote server with a traditional file backup system, like Bacula. The process of restoring the database from a backup is also covered.
