Question

What are the advantages to a "clean" install of 14.04 and a LAMP stack vs the "LAMP on 14.04" one-click app?

I need to setup a new LAMP production server. I’m sure the One-click app “LAMP on 14.04” can do the job. So wondering if installing 14.04 and LAMP scratch is worth the extra time. I’d probably just do the basics listed here -> https://www.digitalocean.com/community/tutorials/how-to-install-linux-apache-mysql-php-lamp-stack-on-ubuntu-14-04

The clear advantage of the one-click app is speed. Assuming I’m going with a vanilla LAMP install, what are the advantages of installing everything myself?

thx

There are no real advantages to a clean install. The one-click image is based on the base Ubuntu 14.04 image with the following packages installed:

apache2 mysql-server libapache2-mod-auth-mysql php5-mysql php5 libapache2-mod-php5 php5-mcrypt php5-gd php5-curl

When we create a one-click image we use fabric to run commands on a droplet which was created using a base image. A quick cleanup task is the done to clean up logs and any temporary files. But otherwise you are left with exactly the same thing as if you ran apt-get and installed those packages.
