What do you'all think of DigitalOcean?

Posted on April 28, 2013

Ok, VPS.net has let me down with another 24+ downtime and unrecoverable disks. Now restoring backups now that they finally let me know what was there can’t be recovered.

It’ looks like DigitalOcean here is quite a bit cheaper - what do existing customers think of them? Reliable, fast, just so-so?

And is DigitalOcean a reseller or actually provider?

Thanks,

Chris

Signed up for my first instance last night, got a 512 mind you.

Did some speed tests on the hard drive as well as network tests.
Disk Speed: Writing 128MB of zeros to the disk. (speed is roughly the same as size goes up)
These are SSD’s so realize that small files and random access times are AWESOME compared to platter drives.
Ran the test 3 times in succession (compressed the output for easy reading)

Digital Ocean 512 SF - SSD
# dd bs=1M count=128 if=/dev/zero of=test conv=fdatasync
134217728 bytes (134 MB) copied, 0.595358 s, 225 MB/s
134217728 bytes (134 MB) copied, 0.246552 s, 544 MB/s
134217728 bytes (134 MB) copied, 0.294823 s, 455 MB/s

Linode 2048 Dallas - Platter Drive
# dd bs=1M count=128 if=/dev/zero of=test conv=fdatasync
134217728 bytes (134 MB) copied, 1.12511 s, 119 MB/s
134217728 bytes (134 MB) copied, 2.47767 s, 54.2 MB/s
134217728 bytes (134 MB) copied, 1.18906 s, 113 MB/s

As for network Using this guide here http://www.cyberciti.biz/faq/linux-unix-test-internet-connection-download-upload-speed/
And a test file from http://cachefly.cachefly.net/100mb.test
I also had to remove the file after each download.
The results below could be due to the instance size at Digital Ocean, however considering they let us do instant upgrades and do transfer us to a new server id say that the speeds are probably true. Also using wget and saving to /dev/null did not help the speed at all in either case.

Digital Ocean 512 SF
root@chef1:~# lftp -e 'pget http://cachefly.cachefly.net/100mb.test; exit; ’ && rm 100mb.test
104898432 bytes transferred in 3 seconds (33.40M/s)
104910415 bytes transferred in 3 seconds (34.75M/s)
104871143 bytes transferred in 3 seconds (32.86M/s)

Linode 2048 Dallas
root@ceres:~# lftp -e 'pget http://cachefly.cachefly.net/100mb.test; exit; ’ && rm 100mb.test
104878520 bytes transferred in 2 seconds (62.51M/s)
104868324 bytes transferred in 1 second (72.05M/s)
104885340 bytes transferred in 2 seconds (64.74M/s)

Overall so far the experience has been ok, I am tempting to switch from Linode as long as they do bandwidth pooling and private ip address (for heart beat failover purposes) I can deal with the network speed loss since to recoup that (im guessing its machine limitations and not their network in totality) Ill just add multiple machines until I get the throughput I need.

Mind you I just started messing around last night, so its been roughly 12 hours. No downtime to speak of and machine creation is fast.
To me it looks like they have proven what they want to do and are now coming out of the infancy startup stage. Now they need to start aging their brand and growing their feature set. Low price can only get you so far if you are trying to compete with bigger companies such as Linode or Amazon EC2. If all they are trying to do is give vps servers thats fine too, but what drew me here was the low price and that they moved into a datacenter that my dad used to work in. I’m with digital ocean for over a month and so far they’ve been incredible. Fast servers, great support and zero downtime. I’d recommend them without a doubt. My server is in Amsterdam data center.
Goran

I directly or indirectly manage about 50 servers with DO. I highly recommend them. The stats listed above are consistent with my experience, and I’m excited for their rollout of private networks and a few other features. I like how interactive they are with customers, their support response time is good, and just overall I love their approach.
