What is DevOps and how does it differ from traditional IT development and operations?

Posted on July 1, 2025

Hey everyone, I’ve been hearing a lot about DevOps lately, and I’m trying to wrap my head around what it actually means. How is it different from the usual IT development and operations setup? I know it has something to do with collaboration and automation, but I’d love a clearer explanation. Also, does it have any impact on things like payroll systems or HR processes when teams start using DevOps practices? Would appreciate any insights or simple breakdowns—just trying to get a better understanding without getting too lost in the technical stuff. Thanks in advance!

Hi there,

DevOps is not just a buzzword, it’s a practical way to break the old “dev builds, ops runs” pattern. Instead of throwing code over the wall, the same team is responsible for writing, testing, deploying, and maintaining it. That means fewer handoffs, more automation, and faster delivery.

The main difference from traditional IT is the mindset. In DevOps, you automate the boring stuff, use CI/CD to deploy often, and treat your infrastructure like code. No more waiting days for someone to restart a server.

It won’t directly impact payroll or HR systems unless you’re building them, but the way teams work on those systems will change. Faster feedback, less waiting, more ownership.
