Hi @jbEel,

Have you checked if something is not listening to that port already? If there is a process using this port, you won’t be able to start webadmin on the same port. You can check the used ports with the command:

nestat -tulpen

Now, if the port is not in use, there could be a thousand possibilities. What I’ll recommend you to do is, try and restart/start webadmin when it fails check your journal - journalctl -xe or the status of your service with systemctl status webadmin. If you don’t see anything there, then turn your attention to the webadmin error_log in there you’ll no doubt see the errors which are causing your service to fail.

If you are not sure how to proceed with the errors, post them here and we’ll try to give you some pointers from where to start.

  • This is what I get.
    running:
    journalctl -xe

    systemctl status webmin.service

    • Hi @jbEel,

So, nothing useful that can be seen. Can you check your WebAdmin error log?

The errors can be in :

      • /var/webmin/webmin.log
      • /var/webmin/miniserv.log
      • /var/webmin/miniserv.error

Hello, @jbEel

Can you execute one of the following commands for more details?

  • journalctl -xe
  • systemctl status webmin.service

You can also open a separate ssh connection and try to start the service while loading the journalctl logs.

Hope that this helps!
Regards,
Alex

  • Thank you Alex.
I am under a continuous DoS attack.
I was finally able to get to my Webmin admin by changing my “root” username to something else. Still under attack.

Thanks to everyone for you help and suggestions.

    • Hello, @jbEel

You can check your logs and see if the attacks are coming from IP sharing the same IP range and then block the whole IP range in order to mitigate the attack. I hope that you’ve sorted this by now.

      Regards,
      Alex

      • Thank you Alex.
I tried the IP range block.
        The attack switch IPs.
Changed root user name and port.
Gets me in to my droplet with puTTY but not the DO console.
        Working on that now.
        Thanks again for your reply.
