Your free trial will start when you sign up for DigitalOcean. You will need a credit card or valid PayPal account so that DigitalOcean can verify your identity.
If you choose to go with PayPal, in order for DigitalOcean to verify that the PayPal account is valid, you make a pre-pay, which must be at least $5. For more information on how to make a pre-pay you can take a look at the official documentation here:

If you add a credit card instead, you do not have to make a pre-pay.
