Hi, me and 3 friends have a wordpress website which we planned to switch over to DO, due to my current host provider over charging us for traffic and storage. I am just wondering if someone could break it down for me whether the high volume at $160 / mo, is able to sustain my site. We are trying to keep hosting cost as low as possible, trying not to exceed $300 because, we also have multiple game servers we need to host.

My website is mainly text and images, around 12-25 PNG images per post. We also let users download our gaming modded content; each files varies from 30mb to 400mb, mostly free. During peak traffic, we can have up to 500-1,000 concurrent users serving our website and this will grow to 1,500 in another 6months time.

This is a very hard question to answer as it has a lot to do with the type of content you’re serving, how optimized that content is (in the case of images and other media), and how optimized your web server software is. Choosing the right Droplet plan depends on your workload. An oversized Droplet would underuse its resources and cost more, but an undersized Droplet running at full CPU or memory would suffer from degraded performance or errors.
You can also resize a Droplet to a larger plan after creation, including resizing to a larger Droplet plan of a different kind. For example, you can resize from a Basic Droplet plan to a larger CPU-Optimized Droplet plan. See the Droplet pricing page for a full list of plans and prices.
