I am running a volunteer developer team for a mental health non-profit, and we’re running into ongoing needs for a systems manager and someone to help us work towards CD. Any ideas where I might be able to recruit a DevOps Volunteer for our mission? That’s a big question, or unlike some of the other questions we get here, I don’t think there’s a single right answer.
Here’s what I would recommend:
- GitHub - Open source as much of your code as possible, this is a great way of “pulling people in”. It helps bridge the gap between being a passive observer and a full-time maintainer. Once you open source your code read through these best practice resources for maintainers especially https://github.com/zenika-open-source/promote-open-source-project#readme
- Local Meetups - Probably not as applicable these days, but even in COVID times, local DevOps and SysAdmin meetup organizers are usually awesome connectors and may be able to help you find help.
- Universities - Connect with compsci professors at your local university or community college, if they like your cause they might be able to refer their students to you to help.
