2FA without a cellular phone

Posted on August 20, 2025

I would like to use 2FA to instead of name/password on my account. However, all the suggested methods in Settings require the use of a cellular phone. I do not have a cellular phone.

I have a desktop with Debian 12, a Yubikey, and Virtualbox VMs with various versions of Windows. Is there a way I can use any of those?

Hi,

I’ve not tried this but as far as I can tell from the docs you can use 2FA on DigitalOcean without a phone by using a desktop TOTP app. In My Account -> Two-factor authentication, choose the authentication app option, then click “Try this instead” to enter the code manually into a desktop app like 1Password, Bitwarden, or Yubico Authenticator. Save your backup codes.

Heya, @460rowland

I believe you should be able to use your YubiKey as well, using the app option when setting it up. The other option will be to use a virtual SIM card tied to an app on your desktop computer, which you can use to get an SMS with the authentication code.
