Do DO servers have soundcards? If not how can I play audio?

Posted on September 24, 2014

The program ‘beep’ seems to run, but I don’t hear anything. Where is the sound going? If I want to do work with playing midi (PortMidi) is this possible too?

To enable sound, you need to load a “dummy” sound card. You can do this with:

sudo modprobe snd-dummy

After doing so, you’ll notice that /proc/asound becomes populated:

$ ls /proc/asound
card0 cards devices Dummy modules pcm seq timers version

You’ll also want to install alsa-base as it is not included on Ubuntu Server by default:

sudo apt-get install alsa-base
