Question

Droplet Plan for WordPress + Mean Stack

Hello,

We are currently developing a project that involves running 2 Web applications together, being them WordPress (PHP + MySql) and a Mean Stack Project (Nodejs + MongoDB).

Is it possible to get both to run in a 512MB Droplet (5$/m)?

And if not, would 2 droplet’s of the same size or the 10$/m one suffice for it?

We are working with a company as a part of a college project, and they show the need to have both technologies running at the lowest price possible, so performance may not be a priority in this scenario.

I installed the Wordpress One Click App, on a 512MB droplet, it seems to run just fine.

Hello.

$5 Droplet will not be able to run WordPress. WordPress runs with MySQL which requires at least 1 GB of RAM. It can be made working on $5 with Swap, but I would not recommend it. About MEAN stack, I have one $5 Droplet that is working OK with it. Going WordPress + MEAN stack on one $5 Droplet will definitely not work.

I did some testing earlier and found out that MEAN stack is not so memory hungry so I would try going with one $10 Droplet for both. Also I would also Add Swap Space by following linked guide. It will make much harder for your application to fail because of Out Of Memory.

Key of that is Swap and testing. Maybe you can make even $5 Droplet + Swap working in your case, but as I said, I recommend at least $10 Droplet + Swap.

You said you’re working as part of college project. I want to let you know that if you’re student, you can get $50 in credit free from GitHub Student Pack. If you didn’t already used it and you’re student, it will be enough for 5 months to run $10 Droplet. You can also get $10 code (DONEWS - I hope it is not forbidden to share it like that, I will edit it if it is) by subscribing to DigitalOcean Newsletters. :)
