Hi, I think I’m having problems with my droplet speed. At first I noticed when I installed (Open) VPN on my droplet, just to try it out and mess around with it for fun. Since I’m a beginner I thought the low VPN speed was caused by my bad configuration.
Now I tried to test my droplet speed using wget.
wget -O /dev/null http://speedtest-sfo1.digitalocean.com/100mb.test
Was what I did in terminal. 104,857,600 5.76MB/s in 34s was the output. The main problem was that if I watch the process starting, it starts really slow, (200KB/s, 300KB/s) and it goes up linear regression.
Is the method of testing correct and should I expect higher speeds?

Here’s the results of the same test on a few droplets I have in other datacenters:
NYC3: 104,857,600 9.60MB/s in 18s
SFO1: 104,857,600 107MB/s in 0.9s
LON1: 104,857,600 7.84MB/s in 33s
We’ve gotten used to the internet being a global thing, but the truth of the matter is that distance still matters. This is often hidden from us by sites using globally distributed CDNs, but at the end of the day it’s going to take longer to download something from San Francisco to Amsterdam than San Francisco to New York. This is why stock traders jockey for milliseconds by having their data centers not just on the East coast of the US or even New York City, but as close as possible to Wall Street itself in lower Manhattan.
That said, if you feel like you are experiencing abnormally slow speeds, please open a support ticket so out networking team can investigate.
