High Network Activity

 • Posted May 6, 2013

I’ve setup New Relic to monitor my droplet, and I’m seeing very high network activity. A steady 15-20 Kb/s received according to their charts. I don’t see anywhere near this type of activity when watching via NetHogs, so I can’t account for it.

I’ve spun up a brand new droplet with a brand new IP address, and I see the same activity. I’ve also setup Ubuntu 12.10 VPS’s on 2 other services with the exact same steps, and I see a fraction of the activity. It only seem to be showing up using DO.

Has anyone seen anything like this? Maybe it’s an issue with the New Relic agent?

raiyu, thanks for your reply.

After I last posted I found that the high network activity only affected droplets created from my own snapshots. Droplets created from standard images were not affected. I haven’t experienced this problem with any other provider either.

Anyway, as I wasn’t prepared to download so much data each day and support could not offer an explanation after 24 hours of investigation I decided to call it a day for now. I’m sure I’ll be back but I need to know why this only affected droplets created from snapshots.

15-20Kb/s maybe related to broadcast traffic depending on the public subnet that you are on but you can also get more visibility into all of the traffic flow by running tcpdump.

This way if there is anything odd in the stream we can review it and see if anything needs to be cleaned up.

I’m certainly seeing high data transfer rates between my PC and two droplets, nearly 1GB between them as I’ve been connected to them for most of the day. I’m certain this has only started today, may be yesterday at the earliest. DO may not charge for bandwidth by my internet provider will start capping my download speeds if this continues.

I’m only running a very basic set-up on my droplets as I’m new to this and I’m trialling DO. Ubuntu 12.10 on each droplet.

Any ideas on what might be causing this?
