It’s my first time using DigitalOcean and I’ve just spun a droplet which was meant to be $5. But now that I see my billing information, it’s at $8.33 and it’s only increasing. What’s happening here?

Apart from the basic Droplet prize, you get charged for your bandwidth usage.
DigitalOcean billing cycles are monthly. Your account balance accrues over the course of the calendar month based on the cost of the resources you use. DigitalOcean are also required by law to apply taxes for certain countries. More on that here

Regarding the bandwidth usage I mentioned, Droplets include free outbound data transfer, starting at 1,000 GiB/month for the smallest plan. Excess data transfer is billed at $0.01/GiB. For example, the cost of 1,000 GiB of overage is $10. Inbound bandwidth to Droplets is always free. More on that here

I feel stupid but somehow when I created the droplet, it picked the high end droplet which charges $40 per month. I’m almost 99% sure I picked the basic one
