I’ve restored a snapshot to a new droplet. I can log in as a user, but I can’t create root access and the previous root password doesn’t authenticate. Must I create a backup and restore from the backup? Will that work?

When you restore the droplet from a snapshot, the root password should be reset and you should receive an email with the new password. If you have added a SSH key, then you will not receive a password email. In either case, if you need to reset the password again, this can be done in the DigitalOcean control panel.
