Generally backups will be run every 4 to 7 days. Here’s the backup history for one of my droplets with them enabled:

I think it’s a pretty fair representation of backup frequency.
The backups are full disk images that give you a snapshot of the entire droplet at a specific point in time. If you have mission critical information that needs to be up to date and consistent, I’d employ additional back up strategies like having a read-only database slave.
If for some reason you see that you haven’t had an automated backup happen, please file a support ticket and the team generate one one demand.
