For Newbie, like me, I find, using a control panel is the best option…

cPanel or DA for paid and for single domain or couple of personal websites, try zPanel (now Sentora)…

On a clean installation of Ubuntu or CentOS, install the panel, it does the rest, like FTP, MySQL or Apache and such…

Take a look at How To Install Linux, Apache, MySQL, PHP (LAMP) stack on Ubuntu 14.04 | DigitalOcean. You can skip PHP and MySQL if you do not need them.

The easiest way is to use program for FTP/SFTP uploads. I recommend FileZilla also, SFTP is always better. The default port for the SFTP is 22, so in FileZilla just use the SSH’s info (ip address, username & password)
