Question

Is there really no way to track CDN egress for my app platform app?

I am running an app platform app where the biggest concern from my end is going to be egress bandwidth costs - the app serves up large quantities of data to end users. I love the low pricing of DigitalOcean app platform egress (2 cents per GB over), but slightly concerning to me is the fact that there appears to be no way to track HOW MUCH egress has been used. It basically seems like if I get unlucky I could suddenly be stuck with some gigantic bill because my egress was way over and I didn’t realize.

Looking at the Insights tab for my app, I see a bunch of INGRESS related charts, but nothing for EGRESS. Am I stupid? Is there some thing I’m overlooking here? Not being able to track egress and therefore costs seems like a pretty major flaw with this platform, and likely a dealbreaker for me.

Hi there,

I recently answered a similar question here:

https://www.digitalocean.com/community/questions/view-bandwidth-usage-for-app-platform

If you want the bandwidth usage for billing purposes, to check that currently, follow these steps:

  • Log in to your DigitalOcean Control Panel
  • Then click on ‘Billing’
  • You will be able to see your current usage and will be able to tell if you are going over your default limits

If you are worried about going your billing limits, you could set billing alerts so that you would get notified in case you go over a specific threshold amount:

https://docs.digitalocean.com/platform/billing/billing-alerts/

That way you can take action in case that anything seems off.
