Hi, I tried to update the kernel via control panel (settings->kernel), chose the new kernel, clicked on change and rebooted via console, but when I log in it still says Ubuntu 12.04, and cat /etc/issue also says 12.04.
Any tips?

Hi!

Are you trying to upgrade to Ubuntu 14.04? If so, you need to upgrade the droplet itself before you select the new kernel in the control panel. To do the upgrade, run:

apt-get update
apt-get dist-upgrade
do-release-upgrade -d

Once you do that, you can then select the newer kernel from the control panel. And remember, before doing a major upgrade, it is always a good idea to take a snapshot in case something goes wrong!
Yes! I’m agree with Andrew’s answer,

I always manage packages update and upgrade on CLI (terminal), on droplet dashboard works very well, but on CLI you have more control and security to make this ~danger~ operations.

On my droplets I always use apt-get regularity:

sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get upgrade
sudo apt-get dist-upgrade

sudo apt-get autoclean
sudo apt-get autoremove

I never had errors with this.
Forgot about the “do-release-upgrade” part. Sorry and thanks for the help! :)
